Today is Arbor Day in Florida

Did you know that today is Arbor Day in Florida?  It falls on the third Friday in January every year and has been celebrated throughout the state since 1886.  Many communities, cities, and organizations take part in tree planting events so look for one near you. The Florida Forestry Service has provided a list of Arbor Day Events around the state and will be planting over 2 million trees in our state forests in celebration.

If you are interested in planting a tree (or trees) on this Arbor Day, consider one of our many great native trees, or even the state tree, the Cabbage Palm.

The City of Winter Haven and UF/IFAS Extension Polk County will be hosting a tree giveaway tonight from 5-7 pm in Central Park in downtown Winter Haven.  Other cities will also be hosting events.  The City of Lakeland will be doing multiple plantings around town.

Here are some UF/IFAS Extension publications that will help you choose the right tree for your yard, plant it properly and maintain it for optimum health.

Happy Arbor Day!
