Florida Blueberries

It's blueberry season in Florida! Are you a home gardener with blueberry plants, or do you prefer to visit one of our many local farms? Whichever you choose, Florida blueberries are a sweet treat this time of year.

The University of Florida IFAS has this publication on growing blueberries in the home landscape. Although, it is not the ideal time of year to plant a blueberry, read through the guide so that you are ready for planting this winter. Blueberry plants have specific growing requirements, so make sure you choose a plant that will work in your landscape.
If you do not want to grow your own blueberries, there are many local farms that you can visit to pick your own berries. Big Bear Farms, north of Plant City, is an organic grower that produces some very sweet berries! I visited the farm a few weeks ago and took the photographs you see above. They choose to grow their blueberries in containers, which is a great option for a home gardener. The plants were full of fruit and I ate every single berry that I took home! Contact the UF/IFAS Extension Service or go to Local Harvest for a list of blueberry farms in Central Florida.

Hurry up! The season is almost over!

Soil tests help determine if any fertilizers are needed to grow certain landscape plants and/or crops. The Extension Service suggests that a soil test is done before you purchase and install new plants. For more information on UF/IFAS soil tests click HERE.
